Baker's Racks

What is a Baker’s Rack, Anyway?

The list of potential furnishings to purchase for your home is almost endless.  Adding a piece like a baker’s rack to your wish list hardly seems worthwhile, particularly when you don’t even know what it is.  While most assume that anything with a name like Baker’s rack naturally belongs in the kitchen, they do not know that this versatile piece can be used in other rooms as well.  But, the best part is that even if you don’t know the first thing about baking, you can still enjoy a baker’s rack if only for the dramatic effect that it will have upon your décor.

Although a decorative piece of furniture in its own right, the baker’s rack is also highly functional.  A baker’s rack can be used as storage, a countertop, a curio cabinet or even as a cooling surface if used as it was traditionally designed.  A wrought iron baker’s rack is the most common and is the original material used on authentic racks.  They were originally designed to serve as a cooling surface for hot pies and things out of the oven.  A traditional baker’s rack has open high shelves that rest over a wide counter with drawers for convenient storage of rolling pins and the like.

It is not uncommon in contemporary décor for baker’s racks to serve as small kitchen islands for storage.  With kitchen space always seeming to be at a premium in most homes, this versatile piece of furniture still has many uses in the modern home.  However, when the baker’s rack was originally designed, it was meant to be a surface for food preparation and storage.  People would use their baker’s rack to roll out dough when baking, store containers with sugar or perhaps flour, and to store baking utensils.  The purpose of the wrought iron shelves was to absorb the heat from hot pie or cookie tins as they were cooling.  Of course, a baker’s rack can be purchased made of other metals or even wood to suit the décor of just about any interior design.

A baker’s rack with storage space, like a corner bakers rack,  is what most people are looking for today, however.  As a means to store items and free up real estate in your home, a corner unit baker’s rack is positively ideal.  These space savers will make your kitchen area less cluttered and still provide you a wonderful accent piece that will enrich your décor.  If you love a wine rack cabinet, then you will love a baker’s rack because they, too, are excellent for keeping wine handy in the kitchen.  They can also be used to store crystal and the other amenities used when drinking wine.

The baker’s rack clearly does not serve the same purpose in modern kitchens as it did when first invented.  While it can still be used to cool brownies and other baked goods, people today tend to buy a baker’s rack more for the decorative effect and storage function than anything relating to baking.  Baker’s racks can be purchased in a wide array of styles and materials so there is sure to be one that is perfect for your design scheme.  Whether you are looking for a baker’s rack strictly as an ornamental piece or to solve some very serious storage space issues in your kitchen, the baker’s rack is still a great addition to any home.
